Vertebral Subluxation Complex

What’s the cause?

A subluxation, or more precisely, the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position from stress, trauma or chemical imbalances.  Automobile collisions, improper lifting, drugs, alcohol, emotional stresses, and long periods of sitting can all cause the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.  Instead of just treating your symptoms, your chiropractor is primarily interested in detecting, reducing and correcting the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

What does it mean?

  • Vertebral – Concerning the vertebral bones of the spine
  • Subluxation – Less than a complete dislocation of a joint with nervous system interference
  • Complex – More than one part

What are the components?

    • Spinal Kinesiopathology – Abnormal motion or position of the spinal bones.  In other words, the bones of the spine have lost their normal motion and position.  As a result, this can restrict your ability to turn and bend.  Therefore, it sets in motion the other four components.
    • Neuropathophysiology – Abnormal nervous system function.  Improper spinal function can choke, stretch or irritate delicate nerve tissue.  As a result,  the nervous system dysfunction can cause symptoms elsewhere in the body.
    • Myopathology – Abnormal muscle function.  Muscles supporting the spine can weaken, atrophy, or become tight and go into spasm.  The resulting scar tissue can firstly, change muscle tone, finally, requiring repeated spinal adjustments.
    • Histopathology – Abnormal soft tissue function.  A rise in temperature from an increase in blood and lymph supply can result in swelling and inflammation.  Therefore, discs can bulge, herniate, tear or degenerate.  In addition, soft tissues may suffer permanent damage.
    • Pathophysiology – Abnormal function of the spine and body.  Bone spurs and other abnormal bony growths attempt to fuse malfunctioning spinal joints.  As a result, spinal decay, scar tissue, and long-term nerve dysfunction can cause other systems of the body to fail.

Each week Dr Hulsebus answers a question about Chiropractic.  Lots of people get information about chiropractic from non chiropractic sources.  These sources answer questions but rarely have any knowledge on the subject.  Because of this Dr Hulsebus now answers a question a week.  Here are a few on this topic.
