The Sciatica Survival Guide

Struggling with a sharp, shooting pain that travels from your lower back, through your glute, and all the way down to your foot? You aren’t alone. Sciatica is one of the most common reasons patients walk through our doors looking for relief. In this episode of the Ask the Chiropractor podcast, Dr. Brant Hulsebus breaks down what classic sciatica really is, what it isn’t, and how we help people find natural, lasting relief right here in Rockford, Illinois.

What is Sciatica? (The Anatomy of the Sciatic Nerve)

The sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in your entire body, starting out at roughly the width of your human thumb. It originates in your lower lumbar spine and sacrum, traveling through your hip, down the back of your leg to your knee, and branching all the way down into your foot. When the spinal bones in the lower back misalign—a condition chiropractors call a subluxation—they place direct mechanical pressure on this massive nerve. The resulting nerve stress can light up your leg with agonizing pain.

What Sciatica Is Not: Common Misdiagnoses

Roughly half of the people who call our Rockford clinic thinking they have sciatica actually have a completely different issue. It is crucial to determine the true origin of the pain to treat it effectively:

  • SI Joint Pain: If you feel pain concentrated in two little spots right along your belt line, it is likely your sacroiliac (SI) joints, not classic sciatica.
  • Obturator or Femoral Nerve Stress: Pain radiating down the front of your thighs or into your groin indicates an issue with nerves coming from your upper lumbar spine.
  • Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis muscle runs directly over the sciatic nerve in your hip. If that muscle becomes tight or inflamed, it can compress the nerve and perfectly mimic the symptoms of sciatica, even though the spine isn’t the direct culprit.

Why Medication Doesn’t Fix a Mechanical Spine Problem

When you consult a primary care physician for leg pain, you are frequently prescribed muscle relaxers or a prednisone steroid burst. While these temporary measures may mask the inflammation, you aren’t experiencing sciatica due to a lack of steroids in your body. You are experiencing it because of a structural spinal misalignment.

In fact, your muscles actively contract and spasm to protect the injured joint from further damage. Forcing those defensive muscles to relax with medication without correcting the underlying bone alignment can often cause additional instability.

What to Expect During Your Evaluation & Adjustment

As a proud Palmer College of Chiropractic graduate and the team chiropractor for the Rockford IceHogs, Dr. Hulsebus takes a highly specific, clinical approach to care. We don’t believe in the generic “yanking and twisting” you frequently see from goofballs on social media. We utilize a thorough chiropractic exam and structural X-rays to pinpoint the exact line of correction needed.

Depending on your unique exam results, your treatment may include direct face-down (prone) adjustments to the L4 and L5 vertebrae, or highly precise Gonstead side posture adjustments to safely restore proper joint motion.

Your Sciatica Recovery Timeline

How fast you heal depends on the overall health of your spinal discs. If your structural X-rays reveal a decreased, dehydrated disc gap, the arthritic process has begun, and recovery will take longer.

Most patients begin noticing substantial relief within the first week after three or four adjustments. By week two, we often incorporate targeted stretches and exercises to support your care. Dr. Hulsebus advises that patients need 10 good days in a row.  Do this before a joint is considered stable. Dropping out of care the moment you feel better allows old muscle memory to take over, frequently leading to re-injury.
