Sedentary Lifestyles and Spinal Health in Children

Introduction

Hello, everyone! I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, a chiropractor from Rockford, Illinois. I’m excited to talk to you today about an important topic: children’s spending too much time sitting and its effects on their spine.

Why Do Children Visit Chiropractors?

You might wonder why a child would go to a chiropractor. Well, kids have spines just like adults. They can get hurt in accidents, falls, or just by playing sports. Watching videos of kids in accidents shows how easy it is for them to get hurt. Remember, kids aren’t indestructible—they can feel pain too!

The Research

A recent study looked into how sitting too much can cause spine problems in kids. Our current lifestyle involves a lot of sitting in front of screens, especially after the pandemic. This research reviewed 20 different studies, covering around 90,000 children. It found that kids sitting for long periods and not moving enough are 25% more likely to have spinal pain.

The Problem with Poor Posture

When kids sit, their necks tend to lean forward, which is bad for their posture. Over time, this can cause more problems, like neck pain or other health issues.

What Can We Do?

To help kids, chiropractors recommend adjustments and exercises to improve posture. If kids work on their posture, they move away from screens, which is a win! Besides visiting a chiropractor, kids should stay active. Whether it’s sports, arts, or just playing outside, movement is key.

Final Thoughts

About 40% of kids under 19 have some kind of spinal pain. So, if your child is having these issues, consider visiting a chiropractor. It can help keep them healthy and strong, just like my family has done for generations. If you have questions about chiropractic care, reach out to a professional. Thanks for reading!
