Specialized Chiropractic Care: What You Need to Know

Hello everyone! I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, and I’d like to welcome you to this edition of “Ask the Chiropractor.” I’m a chiropractor from Rockford, Illinois, and I love answering questions about chiropractic care. Today, we’re exploring the different specialties in chiropractic practice. Just like how doctors have specialties like surgery or neurology, chiropractors can also focus on different areas. Let’s dive in to learn more about specialized chiropractic care.

High School Students Visit

Recently, we hosted high school students interested in chiropractic careers at my clinic. These students had many questions, and one of the most interesting was, “Do chiropractors have specialties?” Yes, they do! Chiropractors can specialize in different areas just as medical doctors do.

Types of Specialty Areas

Here are some of the main areas where chiropractors can specialize:

  1. Pediatrics Chiropractors can pursue a postgraduate certification in pediatrics. This means they take extra classes and participate in research to become experts in caring for children.
  2. Sports Injuries: Some chiropractors specialize in treating athletes. They earn a CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner) certificate, which involves learning how to take care of sports-related injuries.
  3. Radiology: Chiropractic radiologists specialize in reading x-rays. They help diagnose unusual issues and decide on safe adjustment techniques for patients.
  4. Veterinary Care: This newer area involves chiropractors learning how to care for animals like dogs, which have different spinal needs than humans.
  5. Upper Cervical Care: Some chiropractors focus on the top bones in the neck, which are important in treating brain injuries and trauma.
  6. Wellness: Chiropractors with a wellness certification study how to maintain long-term health rather than just treating health crises.

Getting Involved in Specialty Areas

Many chiropractors continue their education after they graduate. For example, I studied pediatrics more deeply after my daughters were born early to better help similar patients in the future. I am also involved in sports chiropractic and use these techniques to help people of all ages, including a 79-year-old retired nurse!

Chiropractors can serve on various councils and committees to advance their specialty areas. These councils help keep chiropractors up to date with the newest research and techniques.

Finding a Specialized Chiropractor

Conclusion

Chiropractic care has many specialty areas, just like in medicine. If you’re curious about a particular area, ask your chiropractor if they are trained in it or if they can refer you to someone who is. Whether you need help with sports injuries, want care for your kids, or are interested in wellness, there is likely a chiropractor with the knowledge to help. Always remember, if you have questions about chiropractic care, it’s best to ask a chiropractor.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the specialties in chiropractic care. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment or reach out!
