Decoding Leg Pain: Part 1 – The Truth About Piriformis Syndrome
Welcome to the first part of our exploration into leg pain! I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, a chiropractor from Rockford, Illinois, and I’m excited to guide you through this journey. Our focus for today is on piriformis syndrome, which is often mistaken for another condition, sciatica.
Sciatica
The sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in your body, can cause significant discomfort if irritated. Piriformis syndrome happens when a small muscle called the piriformis, located under your glutes, gets tight and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. This results in symptoms similar to sciatica, such as leg weakness, foot problems, and pain.
But how can you tell piriformis syndrome from sciatica? Often, people with piriformis syndrome will complain about pain in the SI joint, where the lower back meets the hip, rather than lower back pain itself. We use specific tests to determine this, like moving your leg in particular ways while you lie down.
X-Ray
An accurate diagnosis often involves looking at an x-ray. Chiropractors like me are trained to spot alignment problems in your bones that others might miss, which can explain your symptoms. If you’ve had x-rays taken, make sure to bring them for a chiropractic evaluation.
Treatment for piriformis syndrome often includes chiropractic adjustments to realign your lower back and pelvis. Alongside adjustments, stabilization exercises can help the spine stay aligned, preventing further issues. For severe cases, working with physical therapists or trainers might also be beneficial.
