Welcome back to another edition of Ask the Chiropractor. I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, your local chiropractor in Rockford, Illinois, and today we’re diving into part two of our talk about leg pain. Last week, we talked all about Piriformis syndrome, but this week, we’re focusing on sciatica.

Sciatica

So, what is sciatica? It’s a very common condition where people come into my office thinking they have it. The sciatic nerve is a big nerve that starts in your lower back, goes through the pelvis, and travels down the back of your leg, all the way to the foot. Sometimes, when the bones in your lower back are misaligned, they put pressure on this nerve. This can cause pain, weakness, or strange feelings like itching or burning in your leg.

An important thing to know is that if you’re having pain in your thighs or groin, it might not be sciatica. That kind of pain is likely caused by something else, like Piriformis syndrome. Sciatica usually involves leg pain from the knee down.

If you think you have sciatica, a chiropractor can help determine that. We do simple tests, like asking you to lift your leg while lying down to see if it brings on the pain. We might also take an x-ray to see if your spine is misaligned.

Chiropractic Care

Seeing a chiropractor can help to realign the spine, which should reduce the pressure on the nerve and ease the symptoms. Remember, it’s important to bring any x-rays you have from your medical doctor to your chiropractic appointment.

If you’re dealing with sciatica, remember to ask a chiropractor for advice. They can create a plan to get you feeling better and even give you exercises to keep the pain from coming back. See you next week for more insights into health and wellness!
