The “Tech Neck” Epidemic: How Modern Posture is Impacting Your Spinal Health

Welcome back to Ask the Chiropractor. I am Dr. Brant Hulsebus. In our last episode, we discussed how the nervous system acts as the “Master Controller” of your entire body. Today, we are looking at one of the biggest threats to that controller in the modern world: Tech Neck.

At my clinic in Rockford, Illinois, I perform weight-bearing X-rays on every new patient. One of the first things I look at is the lateral thoracic and cervical views—the sideways view of your ribs and neck. I often ask patients, “Are you worried about becoming that hunched-over person you see in church?” By looking at these X-rays, I can tell you exactly how far along you are in that process.

The 10-Pound Bowling Ball

The human head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds—roughly the same as a bowling ball. Your neck is designed with a natural “cervical curve” that is meant to distribute that weight equally across your vertebrae. However, modern life is ruining those curves.

While my grandfather’s generation of patients primarily struggled with lower back issues due to poor seating, today’s chairs and car seats have improved significantly. We can now sit comfortably for much longer, but that comfort comes at a price. The moment you sit, your head tends to protrude forward and your shoulders roll in. This position, sustained for hours over phones and computers, creates the “Tech Neck” epidemic.

Signs You Might Have Tech Neck

If you aren’t sure if your posture is affecting your health, look for these common “red flag” symptoms:

  • Hand numbness or tingling.
  • Chronic headaches or “knots” at the base of the neck.
  • Loss of range of motion (what I call the “Frankenstein Turn,” where you have to turn your whole body to look left or right).
  • Thyroid, throat, or respiratory issues caused by subluxations in the lower cervical spine.

Fighting Back: The 20-Minute Rule

You can’t always avoid computers or books, but you can balance the stress they put on your spine. I recommend a simple exercise every 20 minutes to negate muscle memory and take the pressure off your nerves:

  1. Stand up straight.
  2. Retract your chin: Bring your head straight back so your ears are over your shoulders (don’t look down).
  3. Squeeze your shoulder blades: Try to touch them together.
  4. Track the ceiling: Look up to where the wall meets the ceiling and track that line back and forth 10 times.

Think of sitting as eating a candy bar—it’s not great for you. This exercise is like getting on the treadmill afterward. It doesn’t make the candy bar “healthy,” but it helps reverse the negative effects.

Why Alignment Matters

When your head sticks forward, your vertebrae undergo massive stress. To prevent injury, your body “locks” those joints up, leading to subluxations. Without movement, your spinal discs can’t stay hydrated, leading to what we call degenerative disc disease. Only a chiropractor is specifically trained to identify these misalignments and “unlock” those joints to restore proper health.
