The Master Controller: Why Your Nervous System is the Key to True Health

Welcome to a special 12-part series of Ask the Chiropractor. I am Dr. Brant Hulsebus, and today we are kicking off a journey through the “Wellness Lifecycle.” While many people first visit my clinic in Rockford, Illinois, because of back pain, neck pain, or headaches, there is a much larger story happening beneath the surface.

As a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic and the team chiropractor for the Rockford IceHogs, I’ve seen firsthand how the right care can move a patient from simply surviving to truly thriving[cite: 4]. In this first episode, we are diving into the “Master Controller” of your entire body: the nervous system.

The Science of the “Safety Pin”

To understand chiropractic, you have to understand how your brain talks to your body. My grandfather, who practiced chiropractic in Byron and Rockford, used a simple analogy: the Safety Pin Cycle.

  • The Top of the Pin: This represents your brain, the source of all instructions.
  • The Bottom of the Pin: This represents your body parts—your heart, lungs, liver, and limbs.
  • The Closed Loop: When the pin is closed, nerves carry signals from the brain, down the spine, and out to the body, then back again. Everything works in harmony.

When a bone in your spine misaligns—what we call a subluxation—that safety pin pops open. The loop is broken. This creates stress on the nerve, which can lead to pain, but more importantly, it interferes with the signals your brain is trying to send.

Beyond the Ache: The Autonomic Nervous System

Most people know that a subluxation can cause sciatica or a dull ache in the shoulder. However, your nerves also control your Autonomic Nervous System—the parts of you that work without you thinking about them, like your spleen, your thyroid, and your digestion.

When you are under physical or emotional stress, your body enters “Sympathetic Tone,” also known as Fight or Flight. This was designed to help our ancestors survive a wolf attack[cite: 52, 54]. In this mode, your body makes drastic changes:

  • Cholesterol levels rise to help blood clot in case of injury.
  • Digestion and reproductive drives shut down because they aren’t needed for immediate survival.
  • Blood flow shifts away from your core and into your limbs so you can run.

The problem occurs when you get “stuck” in this fight-or-flight mode due to a subluxation. Chiropractic doesn’t “treat” high blood pressure or heartburn; rather, we correct the subluxation to allow the proper autonomic response to return, moving you back into a state of “Parasympathetic” rest and repair.

What to Expect at Our Rockford Clinic

If you visit our clinic on Daimler Road with an ache or a wellness concern, we don’t just guess. We use a full medical history, a chiropractic exam, and specialized X-rays to see exactly what is happening with your alignment. This ensures we use the specific technique your body needs to “unlock” your nervous system and help you get healthy rather than just treating a sickness.
