From Sunshine to Supplements: Mastering Vitamin D3
Hello! I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, and welcome to my blog on mastering Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3, also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” is super important to our health, but getting enough can be tricky depending on where you live. Let’s dive into mastering vitamin D3
If you spend at least 30 minutes outside each day in the sun, you’re likely getting all the vitamin D3 you need. But during winter or if you have a busy schedule that keeps you indoors, like me on a long Monday at work, supplements can help. Vitamin D3 helps keep us healthy, especially during winter, so it’s vital to maintain our levels to avoid getting sick, like catching the flu.
What’s fascinating is that we’re meant to get our Vitamin D3 from the sun, not from food. That means we need to be a little creative when the sun isn’t shining. When we take Vitamin D3 supplements, they should be paired with a healthy fat like fish oil, eggs, or avocados. This combo helps our bodies absorb the vitamin properly.
Sometimes, even with supplements, some people’s vitamin D3 levels don’t go up. This could be due to other health conditions. In cases like this, special UVB lights might be a useful trick. By spending time under these lights, your skin can generate vitamin D3. You can even mimic this at home with a UVB reptile light from the pet store.
Remember, the amount of vitamin D3 your body needs might depend on your skin type and where your ancestors are from. Lighter skin tends to make vitamin D3 more efficiently, while darker skin may require more time in the sun or under UVB lights.
