Concussion Care: A Deep Dive into Chiropractic Solutions

Concussion Care: How Chiropractors Can Help

Hello everyone, Dr. Brant Hulsebus here. Welcome to another edition of Ask the Chiropractor. This is my little podcast where I answer questions about chiropractic care. I’m a chiropractor in Rockford, Illinois, and I graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic. I’m also the team chiropractor for the Rockford IceHogs.

What We Do

Today, let’s talk about sports injuries. Last time we talked about how chiropractors help prevent knee injuries by fixing hip imbalances and muscle posture. But today, let’s focus on concussions. Did you know that chiropractors can help a lot with concussions? Some of the best doctors in the world caring for concussions are chiropractors!

If you visit the Harvard Medical School website, you’ll find Dr. Ted Carrick, a chiropractor, is in charge of head trauma. Dr. Carrick started his own institute in Florida and later joined Harvard. He discovered that adjusting the upper neck can help a lot after a head injury.

Amazing Concussion Treatments

Dr. Carrick does some really cool things to help people with concussions. He might put different colored lenses on someone’s glasses and adjust their neck, helping them to sit still and feel better. He’ll even watch athletes play with thousands of cameras to find the exact moment they need an adjustment. When he does this, it helps them get rid of tremors and go back to their sport or normal life.

Another amazing chiropractor is Dr. Scott Rosa. He became famous for concussion care helping Jim McMahon from the 1985 Chicago Bears, who was suffering from CTE, a brain condition caused by repeated injuries. Dr. Rosa saw Jim’s MRI on TV and noticed something wrong with the spinal fluid. After adjusting Jim’s neck, Jim felt incredible relief, like a toilet flushing, as the spinal fluid flowed properly again. This dramatically improved Jim’s headaches and overall health.

How It Works

For a long time, we didn’t understand spinal fluid well. Now we know it helps remove toxins and waste from the brain. Good spinal fluid flow keeps our brains and spines healthy. Adjusting the upper neck ensures this fluid flows freely, reducing pressure and preventing those horrible headaches.

Dr. Longyear, another expert, uses a motion MRI machine to watch what happens during adjustments. This lets him see the spinal fluid drain and new fluid regenerate in real-time. His method shows just how effective these adjustments are.

My Experience

I’ve been lucky enough to meet and learn from these incredible chiropractors. I worked with Dr. Carrick when a Rockford IceHogs player had a concussion. I talked with Dr. Rosa about another player who suffered from head injuries. I even became friends with Dr. Longyear before I knew how famous he was!

Important Points

Remember, you cannot have a head injury without a neck injury. Neck adjustments are crucial for recovering from concussions. I work with medical doctors who do the testing, while I provide the chiropractic care. Sadly, I’ve never received a referral from other healthcare providers, so don’t wait for their okay to see a chiropractor if you’ve had a concussion.

Make sure the chiropractor you see knows how to treat concussions. Not all chiropractors are trained in this area. Ask if they know when to refer you to a specialist if needed.
