Recurring Chiropractic Visits: What Patients Need to Know
Welcome to another edition of Ask the Chiropractor! I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, a chiropractor here in Rockford, Illinois, and today I’m answering a common question: Why do chiropractors want you to keep coming back for visits? Why do some have recurring chiropractic visits?
Why Do Chiropractors Recommend Multiple Visits?
Some people hesitate to start chiropractic care because they fear they’ll have to keep visiting for the rest of their lives. This fear might make you wonder if you should even begin chiropractic care. But let’s break it down.
Think about other doctors. Would you stop visiting your primary care doctor, dentist, or OBGYN? Most of us see these doctors throughout our lives. Your primary doctor may want you to visit regularly to check on your health. Dentists clean your teeth and may find cavities, expecting you to visit regularly. If these check-ups are okay with you, then chiropractic visits shouldn’t be scary either.
The Importance of Repeated Chiropractic Care
When starting chiropractic care, you might need multiple appointments, just like when beginning physical therapy. Why? Both chiropractic care and physical therapy often help retrain muscles. Your muscles can develop bad habits and need more than one visit to relearn the right way.
Think of it like going to the gym. You wouldn’t expect to build muscles after just one workout. It takes time, practice, and repeated effort. Similarly, you can’t expect one chiropractic adjustment to fix everything.
Maintenance Is a Choice
After your initial chiropractic care, your chiropractor may suggest a maintenance plan. This plan isn’t mandatory, but it helps keep problems from returning, just like brushing and flossing help maintain your dental health.
Regular chiropractor visits are like regular dentist visits. You don’t have to go, but it can save you from bigger issues and costs later. Those who stick with their maintenance plan often have healthier spines, just like people who regularly visit the dentist tend to have healthier teeth.
Why You Shouldn’t Fear Regular Visits
Some people still worry about the commitment of regular chiropractic visits. However, many professionals, including the North American Spine Society and the WHO, recommend spinal manipulative therapy as the first treatment choice for acute lower back pain. Chiropractors specialize in this type of therapy.
So, if you are interested in chiropractic care, remember, it’s not uncommon to see various doctors regularly for ongoing care. It’s simply a personal choice similar to deciding to brush your teeth or visit the dentist. Such visits help maintain your health and prevent future problems.
