Debunking Myths and Misconceptions about Chiropractic Care

Introduction

Hello! Dr. Brant Hulsebus here from Rockford, Illinois. Welcome to another edition of “Ask the Chiropractor.” Today, we’re going to talk about some common myths and misconceptions about chiropractic care that  people have and what the actual facts are. Some of these are opinions, but I’m here to clear up the confusion!

Myth #1: Medical Doctors Know More About Chiropractic Care Than Chiropractors Do

Many believe that a medical doctor or an orthopedic doctor knows more about what we do than we do. While they might be great in their fields, they don’t specialize in chiropractic care. You wouldn’t ask your podiatrist (foot doctor) about your teeth, right? Everyone should stay in their lane. If you want to know about chiropractic, ask a chiropractor!

Myth #2: Chiropractors Aren’t Licensed Physicians

In Illinois, where I practice, I am a licensed physician. My license is the same as any medical doctor’s, no matter their specialty. We go through rigorous training and take national boards, just like medical doctors. Our schools are accredited by the same agencies that accredit medical schools. So yes, chiropractors are real doctors with real licenses.

Myth #3: Chiropractors Physically Move Bones Back Into Place During Adjustments

This one sounds scary, but it’s not true. When we do an adjustment, we don’t forcefully move the bone back into place. Instead, we free up the bone and allow your body to heal itself. The bone has grooves and bumps that help it align correctly. Our job is to unlock the potential of your body to heal itself.

Myth #4: You Can Crack Your Own Back Like a Chiropractor

Lots of people think they can just twist their backs and do what we do. But it’s not the same. Chiropractors use motion palpation to find the spot that isn’t moving correctly and then adjust it. When you try to do it yourself, you might only make things worse. Just like eating too much ice cream feels good but isn’t good for you, cracking your own back might feel good but can make things worse long-term.

Myth #5: Chiropractic Care Isn’t Scientific

Some people say chiropractic care isn’t based on science. But let’s look at the facts. When people come to see a medical doctor for lower back pain, they’re often given NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), PT (Physical Therapy), or cortisone shots. Yet, there’s more scientific evidence supporting chiropractic care for back pain than these treatments. The North America Spinal Society, which doesn’t even have a chiropractor on board, recommends spinal manipulation therapy over anything else for back pain!
