Ask the Chiropractor: Nutrition Tips for Young Athletes

Hello everyone! Dr. Brant Hulsebus here, welcoming you to another edition of “Ask the Chiropractor.” In this podcast, I answer questions about chiropractic care and more. I’m a chiropractor based in Rockford, Illinois, and proud to be the team chiropractor for the Rockford Icehogs.

Let’s get started!

Today’s Topic: Nutrition for Young Athletes

Recently, I’ve been getting lots of questions about nutrition and student athletes. Many parents want to know how they can help their kids perform better in sports. So, I teamed up with my friends at Movement Fitness to find some answers. I’d like to introduce Coach Mason and Coach Justin, who specialize in this area.

Understanding the Importance of Nutrition

Many parents ask us, “Can you help my child with nutrition?” The answer is yes! We started focusing on this a couple of years ago when we did a quiz with 130 students. We found that many athletes weren’t eating properly or drinking enough water before their sessions. This was a real eye-opener for us.

Nutrition isn’t just about fueling performance in sports; it also helps reduce the risk of injury. Coach Mason emphasizes this point, saying that good nutrition and hydration can help athletes recover faster if they do get injured.

Preparing for Tournaments

Tournaments can be tricky because you never know exactly when you’re going to play. Coach Justin mentions that it’s important to plan ahead and not leave things to chance. Bringing a cooler with healthy snacks and meals can help ensure athletes get the right fuel they need. It’s not about completely avoiding fun or eating out, but making wise choices.

During tournaments, it’s also important to think about timing. Having early games means waking up early and eating early, which can be tough. But planning ahead can make it easier.

Tips for Parents

Parents play a big role in this. At home, it’s important to have healthy food options available. Teaching kids to reach for nutritious foods instead of junk food can make a big difference. These habits can help them not only in sports but throughout their lives.

We’re also hosting an event on October 15th at 6:30 PM in Rockford to discuss more on this topic. If you can’t make it, don’t worry! There’s a book available with more tips and guidance, which you can check out online.

Final Words from the Coaches

Coach Mason points out that proper nutrition and hydration are key to keeping athletes from being vulnerable to injuries on the field. Coach Justin adds that it’s all about making small improvements over time. These habits will help athletes not just now, but far into the future.
