The Truth About Herniated Discs
If you have recently been diagnosed with a herniated disc, your mind might instantly jump to worst-case scenarios. Does this mean you need complex back surgery? Is your spine permanently ruined? The short answer is no. In this episode of the Ask the Chiropractor podcast, Dr. Brant Hulsebus shares the clinical truth about spinal adjustments and natural herniated disc treatment in Rockford to help you avoid invasive procedures.
Understanding Disc Anatomy: The Sunny-Side-Up Egg Analogy
Your spinal discs act as vital shock absorbers between your vertebrae, designed to dynamically shift and move as your body bends. To easily visualize how a disc works, think of a sunny-side-up egg. The yolk in the center represents the nucleus, while the surrounding egg white represents the tough outer ring.
If the inner yolk completely ruptures and leaks out, it constitutes a severe medical crisis that typically sends a patient straight to the emergency room in severe pain. However, the vast majority of cases that walk into a chiropractic clinic involve the “egg white” being stretched, compressed, or pushing out into spaces it doesn’t belong.
Bulging Disc vs. Herniated Disc: What is the Difference?
There is a distinct clinical definition change between these two terms:
- Bulging Disc: Extremely common and rarely a major cause for panic. If we ran an MRI on almost anyone today, we would likely find a minor disc bulge. It simply means the outer disc wall is being stretched or pushed outward uniformly.
- Herniated Disc: This occurs when the disc material actively breaches its normal boundaries and enters the narrow channels where the delicate nerve roots exit the spinal column, leading to severe nerve irritation.
The Limitations of Lying-Down MRIs
If you bring an MRI report to our clinic, Dr. Hulsebus will review it closely to note exactly how many millimeters the disc is protruding and whether it is pressing left, right, or directly back toward the spinal cord. However, MRIs possess an inherent limitation: you are imaged while completely lying down.
Over two decades ago, when local Rockford spinal centers opened up, their medical doctors met with Dr. Hulsebus to discuss complex cases. We demonstrated to them why lying-down imaging fails to capture real structural stress, prompting local facilities to implement standing, weight-bearing X-rays. A spine behaves completely differently under the load of gravity than it does resting flat on a table.
How Chiropractic Care Helps a Disc Heal Naturally
Chiropractors do not physically “pop” a herniated disc back into place. Instead, we identify the subluxation—the precise area where the spinal bones have misaligned and been locked down by protective muscle spasms. By executing highly specific spinal adjustments (such as face-down prone techniques or precise Gonstead side posture adjustments), we restore proper mechanical alignment and take the structural pressure off the nerve.
Think of it like a hand tightly squeezing a balloon. Medical treatments often try to treat the balloon swelling up on either side of the grip. Chiropractic care focuses on removing the hand entirely. Once the structural compression is gone, the resilient disc can naturally reabsorb and heal on its own.
While roughly 95% of our patients recover fully through precise adjustments alone, severe cases may utilize specialized spinal decompression machines. These devices gently separate the compressed vertebrae, creating a natural suction force that pulls the herniated disc tissue back into its proper place.
Avoid the Surgical Cycle
The standard medical trajectory for a herniated disc often consists of months of physical therapy, followed by multiple cortisone or steroid shots, and eventually a discectomy or spinal fusion surgery. When a segment of the spine is permanently screwed together or fused, it loses all ability to move.
Consequently, the joints immediately above and below the surgical site are forced to take on double the mechanical workload. In our clinical experience, this frequently triggers rapid degeneration in those surrounding segments, forcing patients into a repetitive cycle of additional surgeries until they simply run out of vertebrae to fuse.
As the team chiropractor for the Rockford IceHogs hockey team, Dr. Hulsebus works directly alongside top local orthopedic surgeons. We strongly advocate for an open-minded, collaborative approach to healthcare. You should address structural spinal misalignments early before permanent damage occurs, rather than waiting until the limitations of matter leave you with few options.
