Text Neck & Desk Posture

In our modern world, we spend a massive portion of our day looking down. Whether you are typing away at an office computer, scrolling through your smartphone, driving your car, or working at a manufacturing station, your upper body is constantly being pulled forward. Over time, these daily habits create a destructive structural pattern. In this episode of the Ask the Chiropractor podcast, Dr. Brant Hulsebus explains the underlying mechanics of screen-based strain and shares how we provide comprehensive, long-term posture correction in Rockford.

The Anatomy of Text Neck: Holding Up a Bowling Ball

When you sit or stand behind a desk, your shoulders naturally roll forward so your hands can interact with a keyboard, mouse, or workstation tools. As the shoulders cave inward, your head is forced to protrude forward. Ideally, looking at a human body from the side, the ears should sit directly above the shoulders, and the neck should display a smooth, backwards C-curve. Today, due to constant screen time, we routinely see straight, completely vertical cervical spines.

The human head weighs roughly the same as a standard bowling ball. When your posture is aligned, your skeletal structure effortlessly supports that weight. However, when your head slunches forward, the muscles and ligaments in the back of your neck must work around the clock to prevent your head from dropping onto your chest. This creates a severe, continuous mechanical strain that steadily alters your baseline posture. Even when you stand up and walk around, your body retains this vulnerable, forward-leaning position, leaving you highly susceptible to sudden injuries from everyday movements.

How Workspace Strain Causes Hand Numbness and Arm Pain

When muscles are forced to endure constant overload, they experience chronic inflammation. As this tissue remains inflamed, it becomes structurally “sticky,” binding together and forming deep, painful muscle knots between your shoulder blades.

This localized back pain is only part of the problem. As those large muscle groups from the jaw down to the collarbone become tight and hyper-focused on holding up your head, they begin to compress the delicate nerves emerging from your neck. These compressed pathways can radiate pain, tingling, and numbness down through your shoulder, into your arms, and all the way to your fingertips. Many patients walk into our clinic seeking treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome or localized shoulder injuries, only for us to discover that a misaligned cervical spine is the true root cause of their symptoms.

Why Posture Exercises Fail Without Chiropractic Adjustments

Patients frequently ask if they can resolve their slouching simply by doing daily stretches or posture exercises. However, if your spinal bones have already misaligned and locked into place—a condition called a subluxation—the surrounding muscles will actively fight to protect that restriction.

Attempting to force posture exercises onto a locked, subluxated spine will only reinforce that bad muscle memory, turning a temporary misalignment into a chronic, permanent problem. To achieve real change, a chiropractor must step in first. By utilizing precise structural adjustments, we unlock the fixed vertebrae and restore proper motion. Once the spine is moving freely, you can successfully introduce targeted exercises to build the clean muscular support needed to keep the adjustment in place.

Ergonomic Adjustments and the Danger of Posture Straps

While you cannot always eliminate your desk job, you can make lifestyle changes to counterbalance the physical toll. You can optimize your workstation by raising your monitors higher to encourage an upward gaze, pulling your keyboard closer to keep your shoulder blades squeezed together, and switching to a standing desk to make stretching throughout the day easier.

However, you should avoid relying on the commercial posture straps or braces heavily advertised on television. When you put a broken arm in a cast, the bone heals, but the surrounding muscles become incredibly weak from disuse. Posture straps function exactly like a cast; they force your shoulders back mechanically rather than making your body do the work. The moment you take the straps off, your postural muscles are weaker than before, causing your posture to collapse even further.

Instead of braces, focus on the 30-Minute Rule. For every 30 minutes you spend sitting at a computer, you owe your body 15 to 20 seconds of targeted stretching. Because time flies when you are focused on a project, set a repeating timer on your smartphone to remind yourself to stand up and reset your alignment throughout the day.

A Customized Plan for Long-Term Posture Correction

At Hulsebus Rockford Chiropractic, we do not believe in generic health advice. When you visit our clinic on Daimler Road, we take standing, weight-bearing X-rays to look at your spine from front to back and side to side. We measure your subluxations, evaluate the overall health and height of your spinal discs, and design a customized care plan tailored to your body.

Working alongside protocols from the Pro Hockey Chiropractic Society, we teach our patients specialized, home-based exercises that target both your neurological and musculoskeletal systems. We start by loosening up your spine with specific adjustments, introduce strategic homework stretches as your mobility improves, and eventually taper down your office visits as your body learns to hold its corrected, healthy posture naturally.
