Safe Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Introduction

Hello everyone, Dr. Brant Hulsebus here. Welcome to another edition of “Ask the Chiropractor.” I’m a chiropractor in Rockford, Illinois, and a proud graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. Today, I want to talk about something very important: chiropractic care during pregnancy. Is it safe? Should you consider it? Let’s dive into it! This week we look at safe chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care: A Perfect Match

When you’re pregnant, there are many things to be cautious about, especially when it comes to taking medications. Chiropractors have always provided care for pregnant women because chiropractic does not involve medications. It’s all about using hands to help you feel better.

At Palmer College, we even had special classes on taking care of pregnant women. Our tables can adjust to make pregnant women comfortable during their visit. Chiropractic care is extremely safe and effective for everyone, including pregnant women.

The Webster Technique

You might have heard of the Webster Technique, a method created by Dr. Larry Webster. This technique is especially useful when a baby is in a breech position (feet first) late in pregnancy. It involves a gentle adjustment of a few key body parts:

  1. Tailbone Adjustment: We adjust the tailbone to help ease any tension around the womb.
  2. Ligament Trigger Points: We gently press on certain ligaments to help them relax.
  3. Hip Flexor Stretch: Moms reach over their head to let us check for tight muscles that we can help stretch.
  4. Round Ligament Relaxation: A special ligament, the round ligament of the uterus, can get tight. We do gentle trigger points to help it relax.
  5. Atlas Adjustment: We always adjust the C1 vertebra because it interacts with the vagus nerve, promoting relaxation.

The goal is to reduce tension and allow the baby to move into a better position.

Benefits of Chiropractic During Pregnancy

Research shows that pregnant women who receive chiropractic care often have quicker and more comfortable births. Even if you have never been to a chiropractor before, it’s a great idea to start now.

Chiropractors also have tips and advice, like drinking red raspberry leaf tea near the end of pregnancy to help with contractions naturally.

Chiropractic and Childbirth

Some moms even stop by for adjustments on their way to the hospital. Chiropractic care focuses not just on helping you feel better, but also on helping you have a healthy pregnancy and preparing for childbirth.

Choosing the Right Chiropractor

It’s important to ask your chiropractor if they are comfortable and experienced in caring for pregnant women. All chiropractors are trained during school, but some might focus more on different types of patients.

Conclusion

If you are pregnant, consider seeing a chiropractor. They can guide you through simple adjustments and provide a natural way to ensure both your and your baby’s health. Remember, it’s always okay to ask your chiropractor any questions you have. Thanks for tuning in!
