Back and Neck Cracks: Are They Helping or Hurting You? Hello everyone, Dr. Brant Hulsebus here, welcoming you to another session of ‘Ask the Chiropractor.’ Today, we’re diving into a common question people often ask: “What happens when I hear cracks and pops in my neck and back? Am I helping or hurting myself?”
Back and Neck Cracks
Let’s break it down simply. When you’re twisting your body to intentionally make those cracking noises, you’re probably doing more harm than good. Forcing your neck or back to move in this way can actually cause more stress on your spine. It makes some parts of your spine move too much and locks others even more tightly. This isn’t helping your alignment; it’s actually making things worse.
Our bodies are smart. When we’re stressed, either emotionally or physically, parts of our spine can lock up to protect us from further injury. However, when you try to crack your own back or neck, you’re usually only moving parts that are already flexible, not the parts that need help.
Subluxation
This brings us to subluxations, which occur when bones in the spine are misaligned, causing stress. Chiropractors are trained to identify these misalignments and provide adjustments to help them move properly again. The adjustment process can help your spine maintain its health over time, preventing further problems.
In everyday movements, hearing sounds from your spine is not always bad. Sometimes, it means your body is trying to self-correct. However, if you’re frequently experiencing these noises, it’s important to see a chiropractor. Always remember, trying to fix your own spine is like attempting your own dental work—not a great idea!
