Understanding Chiropractic: Beyond the Social Media Hype
Introduction
Understanding chiropractic, Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus. Welcome to a special post where we’ll explore what chiropractic care is really about. I’m here to clear up some of the misconceptions about chiropractic that you might see on social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Let’s dive into what chiropractors actually do and why those videos might not be the best source of information.
What Do Chiropractors Really Do?
In a lot of social media videos, you might see chiropractors doing things that look strange or even unsafe. Some of these videos show people nearly undressed getting adjustments, or they’re using odd tools like hammers or ropes. That is not what real chiropractic care is about. In reality, chiropractors use specific instruments to make gentle adjustments to the spine, not hammers or ropes for shock value.
Students and Common Misconceptions
At our clinic, we often have students from high schools and colleges visit to learn about chiropractic. They usually ask about what they see on social media because it’s so surprising to them. They quickly learn that real chiropractic care looks nothing like those videos.
Social Media vs. Real Techniques
A lot of techniques you see online aren’t taught in any chiropractic school, nor are they part of any professional boards. These so-called techniques are not recognized by legitimate organizations like the International Chiropractic Association (ICA), which I am a part of. Real chiropractic techniques are safe and approved by councils that put new methods to the test.
Understanding Chiropractic Adjustments
Chiropractic care is about being specific. We don’t just adjust every bone in your spine for no reason. Chiropractors look for the right spot, which we call the “primary subluxation,” to adjust. We perform exams, take X-rays, and maybe have you do certain movements to figure out where the adjustment is needed. It’s like putting together pieces of a puzzle to understand what’s wrong with your body.
The Truth About the “Popping” Sound
Another thing you might notice in videos is the loud popping sound. In reality, it might sound loud to you because of something called the eustachian tube in your ear. However, to the chiropractor or others in the room, it’s not that loud at all. The sound is actually just the release of pressure inside a joint, not your bones cracking.
Picking the Right Chiropractor
If you’re thinking about seeing a chiropractor, make sure they’ve gone to an accredited chiropractic college. There are some people who take a weekend course and call themselves chiropractors, but they aren’t properly trained. A real chiropractor will perform tests and maybe take X-rays before making adjustments. They’ll have a plan for your sessions and how to track your progress.
Conclusion
In the end, social media may not accurately show what chiropractic care truly is. Real chiropractic work is specific, safe, and backed by education and professional approval. If you have any questions about chiropractic care, always ask a qualified chiropractor! Leave any questions or comments below, and maybe your question will be featured in a future discussion.
